Is my image kept?

Only briefly. It goes straight from your browser to private storage, is converted there, and both the upload and the result are deleted automatically after 1 hour. If you are signed in they are kept for 24 hours instead, and you will find them under Recent files, where you can delete them at any time. Nobody else can open them.

Why did my transparent image get a white background?

JPEG, GIF and BMP have no way to store transparency, so clear areas are filled with white. Pick PNG, WebP or TIFF to keep it.

Why is the BMP or TIFF so much bigger than my original?

Accepted Answer

They store pixels with little or no compression, which is what older software and print workflows want. For smaller files, choose JPEG or WebP.

My GIF was animated. Where did the animation go?

This converter works on single images, so an animated GIF or WebP becomes a still of its first frame.

What if I convert the same file twice?

If it's the same file going to the same format, you get the earlier result back instantly, without uploading or converting again.

Why is there a size limit, and can I raise it?

Limits keep the tool fast for everyone. Signed-out visits can convert files up to 10 MB; signing in raises it to 100 MB.

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?

Not yet — a dedicated HEIC converter is on the toolkit's way. Today's formats are PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF.
